Over the years of its existence, Georgia Military College has focused on the development of character concurrent
with the development of intellect. Through its success in these areas, the school has gained adherents among those
who value what it is that is done here to change the lives of young men and women. The commitment of our graduates,
our alumni, is key to the continuing capability of the institution to carry out its mission. As we all know, it is
essential to be involved, to be committed, to have an impact. No one is impressed with the won-lost record of the
referee. And so…I thank you for your involvement with this school, for without your commitment to us, we could not
move forward.
Nothing has ever improved upon a good story that begins, “Once upon a time….” Once upon a time there was a group
of people who had a dream about a small school in central Georgia. Members of that group, different in age,
experience, background, and affluence sensed that this school had made a difference in their lives; it had inalterably
changed them to become the persons that then existed. They had a dream that this school should not only continue its
mission but also improve its capability of accomplishing that mission of creating educated and contributing citizens
for our country. Once upon a time, this eclectic group dreamed their dreams. They were idealists. It is a solemn
truth that we grow great by dreams. All great men are dreamers. They see things in the soft mist of an autumn
morning or in the tongues of fire during a long winter’s evening. Some of us let these great dreams die. But the
great persons nourish and protect them, nurse them through ill times till they bring them to the sunshine and light
that comes always to those who believe in their dreams and who attend diligently to their birth.
Once upon a time, they made their dreams come true. And now we owe a great deal to those no longer with us
who dreamed greatly and who, in so doing, have inspired the rest of us to participate in realizing the dream
come true. Once upon a time…we continued to dream. I am grateful to those of you who are enabling the story
to continue.
